Classic combinations

The Swiss architect Werner Max Moser designed a whole range of furniture for Embru. Despite their similarity to the well-known Bauhaus models, his designs were always characterised by the Swiss philosophy of practical furniture. The Moser product family includes a range of iconic pieces from the cradle of Swiss Modernism.

The Moser armchair ranks among the most significant Swiss furniture designs of the 20th century.

To mark Embru’s 100th anniversary in 2004, the Armchair 1435 was reintroduced into the range. The Moser Sofa 1438 is a reissue of the design originally produced as a special edition in the 1930s. It has been back in Embru’s range since 2017. Also part of the product family are the Moser high-back armchair 1437 – the taller version with a neck roll – the Moser footstool 1552 and the Moser coffee table 1752.

Rueti AG, Iron and Metal Bed Factory

On 1 January 1904, a new company was entered in the commercial register in Rüti in the Zurich Oberland: Eisen- und Metallbettenfabrik Rueti AG. In the 1930s, Embru helped shape the history of Swiss design.

Inspiration

Werner Max Moser

1896–1970

Werner Max Moser was a Swiss architect; he was born in Karlsruhe and studied architecture at ETH Zurich from 1916 under his father, Karl Moser. After working in Stuttgart and with Frank Lloyd Wright in the USA, he returned to Switzerland in 1926. In 1931, together with Sigfried Giedion and Rudolf Graber, he founded Wohnbedarf AG; in 1937, he co-founded the architectural practice Haefeli Moser Steiger; and from 1958 onwards, he taught at ETH Zurich.

Moser designed a whole range of furniture for Embru, some of which proved very popular with customers and were subsequently mass-produced. His designs are often characterised by a subtle sophistication, such as the adjustable seating position on the Moser armchair. These distinctive features enabled the piece of furniture to be protected by a patent.
