The Altorfer deckchair, also known colloquially as the ‘spaghetti chair’, is one of the best-known Swiss design classics in the field of garden furniture. It was designed in 1948 by Huldreich Altorfer, the son of the then director of the company Embru. It owes its success to the comfortable seating experience, its timeless design and its robust construction.

Huldreich Altorfer

1911–1980

Huldreich Altorfer Junior joined Embru in 1934 as a commercial clerk. At that time, his father was the company’s director. A few years after his father’s death, Huldreich Altorfer Junior was promoted to deputy director in 1942. At the end of 1944, he left Embru and founded his own metal furniture factory, Altorfer AG, in Wald and Oberdürnten. In 1971, Embru reacquired this company and, with it, the rights to the Altorfer products.
